We have helped many seniors struggling to make ends meet. Often, they had little or no margin in their monthly budget. Juggling which bills got paid or visiting the food bank added to the stress of knowing they were one financial emergency away from going under.

The solution for many has been to eliminate the principal and interest portion of their mortgage payment (they must still pay taxes, insurance, HOA and upkeep). Often this frees up $500, $1000 or more in their budget. They have resources again to pay bills, save and handle the unexpected.
Sometimes there is enough funds to also pay off other debt or put in place a line of credit for future needs.

What IF?

A growing number of seniors have no contingency fund to handle the unexpected… Car repairs, Home renovations, Roof, medical bills, etc. Less than 6% have adequate long term care provisions.

Two of the major concerns are the prospect of long term care and outliving retirement resources.

One couple in their early 60s put in place a line of credit of $250,000. They were comforted to know, if they let it grow it would likely be approaching $500,000 in 15-20 years when they thought it would be most needed. They were amazed the funds were guaranteed to be there even if their home value was less than the LOC funds.
